The Grapes
Red wines may be made from about 40 different grape varieties across the globe. Cabernet Sauvignon, the most widely known grape variety, makes many of the red Bordeaux wines of France and some of the finest red wines of California, Chile and Australia. There are many others such as Merlot, Temprenillo, Syrah (Shiraz) and Malbec to name a few, which produce some of the most popular reds.
Listed on the following pages are the most common grape varieties along with the healthiest red wines associated with each, and where you can find them. The wines are classified as given in Roger Corder’s The Wine Diet. Corder has discovered that the grape varieties most rich in procyanidins are Tannat, Nebbiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The grapes on the right hand side of the page are listed in order of their health-providing properties. Nearly all red wine grapes provide at least some health advantages if the wine is drunk in moderation.
